In a heroic move worthy of a Hollywood action-hero, a Nebraska sheriff’s deputy boarded a moving semi to save the unconscious driver, who had apparently passed out at the wheel.

Sgt. Todd Volk, a 22-year veteran of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, intercepted the semitrailer truck by sprinting across a highway lane, jumping onto the tractor steps and grabbing the mirror and a handrail on the cab.

Deputies responding to a 911 call about a reckless semi on U.S. Highway 81 caught up with the truck in Madison County, but it wouldn’t stop.

The semi truck, which had been erratically traveling north on U.S. Highway 81 at about 65 miles per hour, had fortunately slowed to about 20 mph as it neared the state’s ninth-largest city, allowing Volk to leap into action.

He jumped from a cruiser onto the highway, then into the truck’s cab, where he tried to awaken the slumped driver, and applied the truck’s parking brake. The driver revived enough to apply the brakes, stopping the big rig and averting certain disaster.

Volk says the driver appeared to be sick and officials speculated that he may have had a diabetic episode.

Radio station KNEN in Norfolk reported the incident in December, 2015 and the heroic rescue was picked up by national news.
